The story behind this post….

My wedding list was at a lovely kitchen shop in the old town of Geneva. This is one of those shops that you go into with the intention of just having a look and come out hours later with a variety of wonderful packages. It was here that I found the Lékué Lemon Squeezer – which I have since nick named ‘the LUKIafter Luki Hubert, it’s designer !

I bought a Luki for my brother, gave them as favours at a dinner party, recommended them to my work colleagues – and always the same reaction…. “Where has this been all my life!!!” It is the best solution to 1/2 a lemon.

So I contacted Lékué (the Spanish companybased in Barcelona who makes these lemon squeezers) to rave about their Luki. I think more consumers should provide feedback to companies, especially when the product it this fabulous. Not only is the product wonderful, but so are the people working at Lékué – the vibe was always friendly, accommodating & very knowledgeable.

Here are the answers to the questions I asked them, to give you the INSIDE SCOOP on Lékué and the Luki!!!

SP-Lemon-squeezer2 SP-Lemon-squeezer

Who invented the company Lékué?

  • José María Lorente founded the company in 1979, he was a great inventor and manager.

What does the name Lékué mean?

  • Lékué is a Basque name that means “place.” It was the founder wife’s name (José María Lorente).

Who is Luki Huber?

  • Swiss-Born Luki Huber is an internationally recognized designer, who was trained at the Lucerne Schools of Art & Design (Switzerland) and the Escola Massana in Barcelona (Spain). In 1994 he moved to Spain and in 1999 he created his own design studio. Luki has collaborated on a regular basis with world famous companies and restaurants such as elBulli, experimenting & reinventing the rigors of cuisine – creating an original way to enjoy cooking.

Why did Lékué decide to work with Luki Huber?

  • Functionality, quality, innovation and avant-garde design constitute the basis of Lékué’s philosophy. Lékué believes that it is indispensable to have a close relationship with the design world & it’s designers, because this is the origin and condition of the constant innovation of our products .
  • Our collaboration with Luki Hubert was born to join functional and innovative designs with new products, always focused on improving, facilitating or reinventing well-known objects or processes for both the professional and home/ kitchen, through the use of 100% Platinum Silicone.

Was the lemon press the 1st project you did with Luki Huber?

  • Yes, it was the first product designed by Luki Huber and we have had a very successful collaboration since then. The great success of this product is due to its characteristics and original design. The luki lemon press has won two international and prestigious awards: the “Good Design Award” (Japan, Oct 2007) and “Design and Technological Innovation Award” (Madridfusión, Jan 2007).

What inspired the design of the lemon press?

  • The challenge was to reinvent different kitchen tools & processes, where platinum silicone had a real benefit.

How long did it take to develop the lemon press?

  • It took almost 2 years to launch the product, but we still continue enlarging the products range since then.

Where is the lemon press made in Spain?

  • Yes, it is.

Why is it made in green?

  • Green is easily related to citrus fruits

How many lemon press are made each year?

  • This product is quite new as you know, so we do not have figures from such a long time. Last year 200.000 units were placed in the market.

Over the years, will the acidity of the lemon juice deteriorate the silicone?

  • No, it will not. Platinum silicone is a very resistant material, so the acidity doesn’t deteriorate it. Besides, silicone can be reused as many times as needed, it is very hygienic and dishwasher safe. Be careful with the use of knife when cutting and also when cooking in direct contact with fire (burners, etc.).

Will you make a Luki squeezer for other citrus fruits (cítricos) eg: oranges?

  • We discarded that idea since at least 3 oranges are required for a single juice and there are other better solutions for this purpose in the market. It would not be a real improvement of the existing orange juice making products. At Lékué, being innovative is one of the aims when developing products.

As this is a cooking blog, my Lékué Luki post would not be complete without a recipe – and one using the LUKI!!!

Lemon cake

  • 110 gr unsalted butter
  • 110g white sugar
  • 1/2 vanilla bean*
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 110gr white all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • finely grated ring of 1/2 a lemon

*Take 1/2 a vanilla bean pod, slice it lengthwise & remove the inside by scrapping with a teaspoon

For the lemon / sugar syrup:

  • juice of 2 lemons (here’s where the LUKI comes in handy)
  • 50gr icing sugar
  1. Pre heat the oven to 180°C / 350°F
  2. Line a small loaf tin with baking paper – this is important for absorbing the  syrup!
  3. Bring the butter to room temperature
  4. Beat the butter until light in colour
  5. Add sugar & cream until light and fluffy
  6. Add vanilla & mix to combine
  7. Add the two eggs and beat well
  8. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder & salt
  9. Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter/egg mixture.
  10. Finally add the grated lemon ring, mix untill combined.
  11. Pour batter into lined loaf tin.
  12. Bake for 30 mins depending on loaf tin
  13. While waiting, in a small bowl combine the lemon juice and icing sugar = syrup!
  14. Remove from oven. Leave cake in the loaf tin.
  15. IMMEDIATELY prick the cake with a tooth pick (approx. 15 times).
  16. While the cake is still warm, slowly & evenly pour the syrup over the top of the cake.
  17. Leave cake to sit in the loaf tin for 10 minutes so all the syrup is absorbed.
  18. Remove cake from the tin and leave to cool on a cooling rack

Oh my God, where has this been all my life? I’m FOREVER throwing out lemon halves (or Russell is – and tutting at me for keeping them so long) that have shrivelled beyond use sitting open in the fridge.

The Luki lemony thing looks like the perfect solution!
Therefore I would say “my favourite leuke product is the Luki lemon squeezer”!

    • Hi Jenny,
Thanks for your note – honestly we don’t know how we lived without this luki! It also squeezes limes, and keeps both perfectly fresh in the fridge for days & days. No more plastic wrap needed.

LOVE the STRETCH TOPS- so smart!
    I’m in!
    Beautiful post Mrs. SweetPea!

    • Hi Emily,
Stretch tops are a lifesaver & eco saver – as like the luki they eliminate the need for plastic wrap. Great that the tops come in different sizes & colours.

My favorite Lukue product has to be the CELEBRATE, this does all the molding for me and lets me present easy attractive dishes to my guests! Oh, I really like the lemon squeezer too! Great products………I need some of those ice cubes for my summer cocktails!

  4. Renee Says:

WOW! This must be one of the niftiest (& way cool looking) kitchen gadget that I’ve seen! Love it! What a great find. Yeah, my favourite Lékué product has to be this Luki lemon squeezer.

    • Hi Renee,
I had the same reaction when I 1st saw the luki! Not only is it functional, but is has a great design. Makes sense as this is Lékué’s philosophy when reinventing & redesigning household items.

Actually, my favourite IS the lemon-squeezer! Not trying to win any favours, but it as impressed EVERYONE who has used it / seen it / had fun with it / sampled the *amazing* mojitos it makes! Because yes, it also squeezes limes. And oranges. And peaches. And pears…..
It’s the all round perfect squeeze!!

    • Marjorie Says:

I think the Luki is definitely my favorite since I have been able to keep lemons longer and am using them more in everything I cook because of it. It is the best little kitchen gadget ever – love the size, love the color and love what it does.
I agree with Fiona – it is the prefect squeeze and what a great invention!
Great pics too as you can really see what it looks like.

      • Hi Marjorie,
Thanks for your note! It is true that if you can keep your lemons fresh for longer & they are easily at hand in the fridge, that you will use them more often when cooking. Gone is the issue of not wanting to cut a lemon in 1/2 as it never keeps or gets lost in the back of the fridge!! The Luki is the perfect solution – the exact amount of juice, just when you need it

Wow, there are so many cool things on the Lékué website! I think I love the collapsible steamer the most, although it’s really hard to decide. Thanks for posting about this company!

    • Hi Dorothee,
Thanks for your note. I could spend hours on the Lékué website. Each product is unique, interesting and useful. I have their collapsible steamer and can tell you that it is a wonderful invention. It is light in weight, cooks fabulously and is easy to clean. You just have to decide if you want to use the removable tray to steam or if you prefer to remove it and cook your fish / meat in its juices / marinade.

Wow, what an amazing find! Love the bright colors!

    • Hi Katya,

I will keep my eyes open for more new kitchen gadgets and recommendations for you. There is a garlic tube I recently came accross to remove the clove skin before chopping which you might be interested in. Hope your mom likes the lemon cake.

I have been using the steam case and can vouch that it is a fabulous invention. See my note below to ‘Dorothee’ re cooking with the steamer!

  10. That Luki is adorable! And we certainly use a lot of lemons…I also like the Celebrate line as well as just the classic moulds…especially individual muffins. Cool! Thanks for introducing me to this company 🙂

    • Hi Michelle,
I thought of you while I was writing this post and your lemon inundation each year – I think the Luki was made for you 🙂 I have friends in Spain who share your same problem – there are times when they have so many lemons they don’t know what to do with them all!
They are a great company – always evolving, inventing, I look forward to seeing what they will come up with next. Love sharing new finds.

New kitchen thingies…. fabulous! What great ideas for hostess gifts – and for me gifts. I adore the Stretch Tops, crave the Cooking Mesh and of course, absolutely need the Luki (my favourite). Those poor dried-up shrunken little lemon halves that have lingered far too long in our fridge over the years will be no more.

    • Hi Hélène,
thanks for your comment. The Luki’s do make fabulous hostess gifts – I had a party for ‘les filles’ and gave these as presents. The girls were thrilled!
Goodbye shrivelled, dried up lemons HELLO LUKI! Love to hear about one of your favourite French recipes when you have a minute.

  13. Kate Says:

I’m very into bathroom decor right now (mine looks like a cross between a charity shop and Versailles) so I reckon my favourite products would be those designed for the bath. Especially the shower curtain! The lemon press is brilliant! Because I cook only for myself, I always find myself with half a lemon left languishing quite sadly in the refrigerator which ultimately discourages me from using them at all. Quite brilliant to invent it on their part!

    • Hi Kate,
Thanks for your comment. Would love to see some pics of your decor – charity shop crossed with Versailles sounds very intriguing!!! Can you post some photos on your blog???
You are my 1st voter for the Lékué bathroom products – agree the shower curtain is fabulous. The luki put an end to your sad languishing lemons 😉 Hope all is well on your end and that you are doing something nice for the summer, pls be in touch xxx

  14. Alice Says:

I really like the Steam cases of all sizes…I think it is brilliant that they can go into both the oven or microwave…I love silicone products, so clever. The lemon cake recipe you have looks great, very similar to the traditional Lemon Drizzle cake. I have a recipe for you also done in a loaf tin a traditional old English Lemon Pound Cake. Have you tried a silicone loaf tin they are fab.

    Speak to you soon

    • Hi Alice,
Thanks for your comment. Your lemon pound cake recipe sounds wonderful, looking forward to trying this – I have baked with the silicone loaf tins as my family has a set in Provence. Definitely a good investment and so handy that they can be put in the dishwasher!
You are officially entered in the Lékué Luki contest 🙂

  15. Olivier Says:

I love their kitchen moulds, the shapes are relly great especially the pumkin 3D mould (very decorative…) and the imperial series which look like real antique copper moulds! Still my favourite product is the ‘Luki’ lemon press. I think it is the most inventive and a must to have in any kitchen. It is a great solution when you don’t need to use a full lemon. With its bright green colour you can never loose it in your kitchen drawers or in your fridge….! I vote for the Luki!

  16. Elise Says:

I just love the hand spatula – it is so versatile and easy to keep clean.

    • Hi Elise,
Thanks for your note – the hand spatula would come in handy for your honey cake! Please send through the soup recipe you were speaking about, love to give it a try for the blog.

The collapsable steamer is banging!!!! I love me veggies, and have never had a proper steamer. Thank goodness the lime green Lekue collapsable steamer has come into my life..

Thank you Lekue, you the best

    Nathan x

  18. Marjorie Says:

I made your lemon cake today and rave reviews from me, K & D! It was an easy recipe and I had all things on hand. Very moist and nice lemony taste but not too overpowering! Lovely with a cup of tea mid afternoon.
So, Luki………….where were you when I needed you!!! I HAD to wrap one half a lemon in saran after all! Cannot wait to own another L Lemon Squeezer!

    • Hi Marjorie 🙂
So pleased to hear that the lemon cake was such a success!! I also don’t like when the lemon taste is too overpowering or the cake too sweet.
Perhaps this recipe would work with other citrus fruits! And yes this is just another example of the utility of the fabulous Luki!!! xxx

  19. Stephanie Says:

My favorite Lékué products are the ice trays. They are unique and lots of fun.

    • Hi Stephanie,
Thank you for your comment 🙂 It is very hot here in Switzerland, so I think we will be investing in some of these ice trays ASAP!!
Received your email and will be writing back soon. Hope all is well your end and look forward to catching up
